About the Red Lion
After several months of closure, the once popular Chelmondiston pub has reopened its doors.
Latterly known as 'The Venture', it has now reverted to it's original name, 'The Red Lion'
as it was always known.
The inside has been completely renovated and now provides a clean and comfortable venue to enjoy
the wide variety of home made food available. There is an excellent range beers on offer at very
reasonable prices.
With plenty of space inside and ample parking, The Red Lion is certainly worth a visit and those
that do will certainly go back for more.
Your Hosts
Sharon and Ian Shipp have purchased the pub from Admiral Inns and it has now become a Free House,
stocking a wide range of excellent and reasonably priced beers.
They are no strangers to the licensed trade, having run 'The Chestnut Horse' in
Great Finborough for many years.
History
The pub building dates from approximately 1750. The Original Red Lion inn occupied the just the west
section of the building which later became the 'public bar' with two shops occupying the rest of the
building. Later, these became the 'lounge bar'. The serving area was between the two bars with a hatch
at the front for off-sales. Each bar had its own entrance door inside the front door of the pub.
In 1998 the two bars were knocked into one to create a large single room with the serving area
moved to the back of the pub. At this time it was renamed 'The Venture'. The pub was closed in
November 2007 only to be reopened in March 2008 as a free house and is now once again the Red Lion.
